Changes to filing GST online

Date: 31 Jul 2013 By Yuline Little Category:

It’s smarter, it’s more user friendly, it’s quicker and surprisingly there is no catch. From the 10th of September 2013 the outdated static electronic form on the IRD website will be completely replaced by the myIR secure online GST filing service.

This is the first of the IRD's business services to go digital, with more expected to follow.  Over 90,000 businesses are already successful using the new GST filing service, which boasts a number of improvements including:

  • Instant confirmation of receipt
  • GST returns are pre-populated with the majority of your details and tailored to your circumstances. For example, if you're filing GST and provisional tax together, you'll receive a combined form, and you'll only be asked to complete the sections relevant to your situation
  • All your GST records are conveniently stored on one secure place
  • The status of your GST returns can be tracked
  • The service has built in checks and calculations to help ensure the information submitted is correct
  • Reminder emails are automatically sent out until your GST return is filed , including one 3 days before the due date
  • myIR can also be used to file Employer Monthly Schedule

Once your first GST return has been filed using the new online service, the IRD will automatically stop sending you out paper based returns. So why not give it a go and visit  to setup your myIR account.

Delegating someone else to file your GST returns online

This new service also allows business owners to delegate responsibility for filing GST to somebody else, such as their accountant. To do this: login to your myIR, use the 'manage account access' function (under 'Tools' on the right hand side), then follow the instructions to create a new user, enter in your accountants details and delegate access to them.

Owners who are not actively involved in the business also have the option of appointing an executive office holder to set-up a myIR account on their behalf. The executive office holder is then able to delegate responsibility for filing GST to the appropriate person as above.
